Below we offer an example of a thoughtful reflective essay that effectively and substantively captures the writer’s growth as time passes at CSUCI. We claim that you write your personal essay before reading either of these models-then, having completed your first draft, read these up to consider areas in your background that you have not yet addressed and which can be relevant to your growth as a reader, writer, or thinker.
Any mention of either of the essays must certanly be correctly cited and attributed; failure to do so constitutes plagiarism and will end in a failing grade on the portfolio and possible other serious consequences as previously mentioned into the CSUCI Code of Conduct.

Author: would rather remain anonymous
As an English major I have learned to comprehend the peaceful, yet exhilarating moment when an author to my mind engages’s ideas on a typical page. As Toni Morrison says within the Dancing Mind , „reading is to experience an individual’s own mind dancing with another’s.” In my early days as a college student, I wanted to understand the „true” meaning of a work or what the author intended, however, We have now realized this will void literature of the most noteworthy complexities. Individual interpretations bring varied insights to a work and it is also interesting to indicate messages the writer may not s/he have realized included in the piece.
We have always been a thinker, but throughout my coursework, I have greatly sharpened my critical analysis skills. In place of concentrating on proposed meanings or background that is biographical I have learned to continuously ask „why” on a lot of different levels. I challenge myself to dig into a text as deeply as possible and unpack every detail to build up a satisfying close read. Also, by reading multiple novels by the author that is same have learned to spot different writing styles and then make connections that weave texts together; this helped me develop a deeper understanding of the novels. I realize that I did not actively read the book when I look at one of my freshman level novels and see clean pages. I assume you might say that I have learned to read through with a pen, which has drastically taken my writing to a different level because I am in a position to connect back with my initial insights marked regarding the page.
Writing had always been certainly one of my strengths, however it was difficult to take that initial step past the senior high school, five-paragraph essay form that constricted my ideas for such a long time. Moving past this form, however, has greatly opened my mind. My thoughts can now become more complex because We have learned how to sustain a logical argument in an manner that is organized. My writing is becoming increasingly more concise and I no longer have room for additional „fluff” or „padding.” Another improvement is my power to point out multiple complexities within a text, rather than staying with one-sided arguments during my papers. Furthermore, learning how to locate peer reviewed journal articles and order books through interlibrary loan has significantly widened the scope of my research, which includes result in more papers that are scholarly credible references. My writing is indeed alot more interesting than it used to be.
It is hard to recognize gaps during my knowledge as an English major, only because personally i think like I have learned a great deal. Personally I think I need to be prepared to teach high school students their required literature that I have largely expanded my literary analysis and writing skills, but. I think it might be helpful to identify commonly taught novels in our local schools that are high study them myself. By studying the necessary literature and thinking about how to teach it, i shall have a foundation that is sturdy work from once I am within the classroom.
